Professional development is a topic that I want to pursue because;

  1. PD IS significant in improving the quality of early educators

  2. PD affects the classroom teaching quality

After reading through many articles and posts on online forums, I became interested in the research of this topic as it would affect me as a teaching professional working in the sector in the nearby future. Other than that, knowing more about what is happening in the EC sector pertaining to issues and trends gives us a better idea on how we can further improve on ourselves and pass of the influence and passion to our colleagues. I realised the importance of educators signing up for relevant professional programs that build their learning around their teaching beliefs.

During the process of gathering information, the huge amount of information on the lack of manpower and government set-budgets were significantly mentioned in the articles that it became apparent to me that manpower, budget and the willingness of teachers are the main problems that revolve around this topic. There were false discoveries about the budget and manpower on this issue I have made in this process. ECDA’s budget for professional development has been increasing the recent years, and investments in early childhood leadership progression in the early teaching career is also on the rise. Henceforth, a lack of budget should not be a need for centres under ECDA. As for the lack of manpower in the sector, more is on the low retention rate of Edu-carers and high turnover rate of educators in-service. Therefore, there is a need to find out if the centre’s management of workers/staff’s professional development contribute to the lack of workforce in the centre, to determine if there is such a need.
