Reflection (Rationale and Purpose) - Min Min

April

Dates: 09/04 - 05/05

Total Duration: 48h

Sundays, 08:00am - 12:00pm

I started off with an idea to work with bilingualism, however as I started discussing with my group, there were many conflicting ideas. There were many concepts shared amongst the group, and each of us had a different passion towards different topics. We then resolved this by analyzing and researching the topics that were suggested. After much contemplation and drawing of several flow charts, we have decided to settle on professional development. Due to its’ prevalence in Singapore’s work industry, we have deduced that it was an ongoing issue that could be further examined and studied on. It was a topic that the group had simultaneously agreed on.

Through the analysis and researches conducted on my own, I have discovered that bilingualism does not affect the child's development in any way. Also, I have learned that professional development is beneficial to everyone in the working industry and is applicable to people of all positions in the working hierarchy. I’d thought that in the early childhood industry, because the content being taught is simple for adults to understand, there was no need for any further studies upon graduation.

However, I was completely wrong on my part as I've learned that there were many outlets for professional development, especially in the education sector. Teachers, senior teachers, principals, they all have to go through professional development in order to prevent themselves from falling behind the current workings of the sector. Upon further studies, I have also realized that for professional development to be effective to its’ participants, there are a lot of factors to consider. They include the willingness of the participants, the passion they have, the budget, the participants’ and the school’s schedules and so on.
