Reflection - Raphaela

When I first started on our selected topic, Professional Development (PD), I thought that it only meant going and attending courses and workshops held by ECDA and NIEC. With this mindset I was only thinking about the factors that would affect teachers or the center from sending their teachers for PD. The factors that came to mind were budget, time constraints and willingness of teachers to upgrade their skills. This thinking lead me to only look for articles talking about PD for in-service teachers and how it has become more prominent in the news nowadays. After reading a few articles, I soon discovered that PD relates to courses, workshops and educational certificates that contributes to one’s knowledge about a job field, in this case is Early Childhood. After reading more into the articles, I soon found that there are PDs for pre-service teachers which are the Diploma, Bachelor and Master certificates in Early Childhood provided by the Polytechnics, Universities, ECDA, NIEC etc. along with internships and attachments held by the institutes and the centers. This process has helped me to realize how PD is more than just courses and workshops to upgrade one’s skills and knowledge but also the journey into entering the field. PD is a whole journey that one goes through to gain the knowledge and harness themselves with the skills needed for the job, starting with the education to gain the foundation then onto work to gain the experience and lastly the courses and workshops to further enhance themselves and to keep updated on the current trends in the Earl Childhood field.
